Mrs. Mae Frances Williams Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is established in memory of Mrs. Mae Frances Williams, the first African-American English instructor at the Portsmouth Campus, started her career with TCC in 1971 and retired in 2001.

In 1971, Mae Frances became the first African-American English teacher at Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth Campus). She taught English, Reading, and Speech for the college. She started the Black History Month program which is still in existence today. She received the “Portsmouth Campus Student Government Association’s Distinguished Faculty Award” and other additional awards and honors from the college. She retired from the Norfolk Campus of Tidewater Community College in 2001.

Scholarship award criteria are as follows:

a. Student must play an active role in planning TCC’s Black History Month.
b. Student must provide a letter of recommendation from the campus leader in charge of Black History Month activities.
c. Student must have not yet met the cost of attendance for the year.
d. Student can be a full-time or part-time student.
e. If a continuing student at TCC, student must have an overall GPA of 2.5.
